Speaker |
I welcome an opportunity to speak at your next event.
As
you can see in reviewing my biography, I have held real-time mission leadership
positions throughout the Apollo program, including Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP)
which was the first international space mission. Additionally, I had direct
involvement in Skylab, early Shuttle missions and the International Space
Station (ISS). I have received awards in recognition of my service to our
nation.
My
name is readily associated with the Apollo era. I assumed a significant role in
the Apollo 13 mission as lead EECOM flight controller in Mission Control. My
involvement was portrayed by actor Clint Howard in the movie "Apollo 13"
(EECOM was my Mission Control console call sign.)
Not long ago, my autobiography "Apollo EECOM:Journey Of A Lifetime" was
published by
Apogee Books. Together
with the notoriety from the movie, there has been a continuing request over the
years for me to speak about my space program experiences. I was in the thick of
things during the height of the lunar landing program - my memory of that period
and the human interaction is still clear in my mind and I communicate those
experiences before various audiences and the communications media.
I've
come to the realization that I am one of a small group of private individuals
who are engaged in what can euphemistically be called "knowledge preservation."
It is sobering to know that most of my peers are both retired and scattered or
have passed away. I'm the only flight controller, especially from the Apollo
era, who is out speaking to the public and has written a book about my life
experiences in and out of Mission Control.
The knowledge and experience of managing human spaceflight in the endeavor of
landing them on another world is being lost to our new Vision for Space
Exploration. This will be the first program in which a progressive handover of
experience such as was effected from Mercury to Gemini to Apollo will be absent.
Even Skylab and ASTP benefited from the participation of the same experienced
personnel.
My
honorarium is a reasonable low rate. I am dedicated to deliver an
informative, interesting human perspective of our nation's historical groundwork
and foundation for today's space endeavors.
If you're interested in requesting my speaking services, please drop me an
e-mail with the details of your prospective program.
